“Sharptenant.com is a student-run website created by two Cal Poly seniors. The website idea was inspired by a personal series of horrible landlord and housing experiences in San Luis Obispo. By word of mouth, we came to realize that we were not the only ones experiencing these injustices in SLO, as many student-renters had unfortunate landlord experiences to share. Additionally, it became clear that students (including ourselves) were lacking a fundamental knowledge base on tenant rights and renting experience.

Because students don’t understand the power they hold as tenants, they are unable to implement and use current housing laws in their favor. Therefore, many students currently live in substandard housing and simultaneously pay alarmingly high prices. By informing and empowering students about their rights, while also allowing students to share and rate their landlords with one another, we hope the renter’s quality of life in SLO will increase, so students may live in the conditions that they deserve.

Also, we must address landlord-tenant relations. Sharptenant.com will hopefully provide transparency between landlords and student-tenant relations. We want tenants to know both the positives and negatives of potential landlords prior to renting.
